Author E. Lynn Harris dead at the age of 54

Openly gay African American author, E. Lynn Harris passed away today. We owe the word down low to Mr. Harris, because he certainly made it a household name. Harris famed books were often controversial and revealed a secret world of gay black men, married to women.

Harris became the first black male cheerleader while attending the University of Arkansas. After graduation he became a computer salesman with IBM for a time. Harris was initially unable to land a book deal with a reputable publishing house for his first work, Invisible Life, so he self-published it through a vanity publisher and sold copies from his car trunk. Since then, five of his novels have achieved New York Times bestseller status.

Arkansas Sports 360 reported this morning that Harris died at age 54 during a West Coast book tour. A Random House executive has confirmed his death. There are no further details about the cause of death, though the Arkansas Times reported hearing the author suffered a "serious health setback" earlier today.
